Stephen Burks ‘19
On September 16, the High Museum of Art debuted "Stephen Burks: Shelter In Place" the solo exhibition of Stephen's global workshop-based design practice.
For nearly twenty years, Burks and his studio, Stephen Burks Man Made have been proponents of a pluralistic vision of design that is inclusive of all cultural perspectives.
Pictured here is the Shelter In Place project, a new body of work commissioned by the High Museum on the occasion of the exhibition, exploring the potential of radical design innovation during times of crisis.
In the wake of the global pandemic and consecutive lockdowns, these five speculative prototypes - such as the Woven TV or the Spirit House - suggest new meanings about our relationship to our homes through themes such as consumption, spirituality, and technology.
The accompanying exhibition catalog features contributions by design historian Glenn Adamson, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture curator Michelle Joan Wilkinson '20 as well as an insightful conversation on design with the late bell hooks.
The exhibit is on view at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta until March 2023.
