Michiel van Iersel ‘19

Michiel, architect Anne Dessing and photographer Iwan Baan, along with other artists and designers, were invited by ArkDes, the national centre for architecture and design in Stockholm to interpret the history and forced relocation of an Arctic mining city. Their work is now featured in Kiruna Forever, an exhibition curated by Carlos Mínguez Carrasco. It’s a multi-layered story of extraction, global capitalism, urban transformation, place and community.

Michiel, Anne and Iwan’s contribution—Global Kiruna—shifted the focus from movement of the town to the movement of iron ore from Kiruna mines along transportation routes to buildings around the globe. Find out more about Kiruna Forever from recent articles in Places, and Metropolis
